This offseason, the New York Giants will have to make a number of crucial roster decisions. The Giants have a lot of spots that need to be retooled and other positions with starters after an injury-plagued 6-11 season. Even so, they might benefit from competition or progress, like in the case of their quarterback position.

Despite having just signed a $160 million, four-year contract with the Giants, Daniel Jones has missed 11 games this season due to various injuries. Nevertheless, Jones was having trouble on the pitch prior to his injury this season. After a shortened season, he would end up with a 1-5 starting record and the lowest passing yards per game average of his five-year career—by almost fifty yards.

Naturally, re-signing Tyrod Taylor, who was the team’s backup the last two seasons, would be the first move. After Jones was injured in Week 6, Taylor became the starting role. That week against the Bills, he performed admirably, transforming an otherwise nonexistent offence into one that was at least somewhat effective, but the game ended in defeat.

As a starter, he had a 2-3 final record, a 64.4 completion percentage (116 of 180), 1,341 yards of passing, five touchdowns, and three interceptions. The problem with the 34-year-old Taylor, though, is that it appears as though he is prone to injuries. He went on injured reserve after suffering a rib cage injury in the overtime loss to the Jets, which allowed Tommy DeVito to take the field for a while before Taylor eventually took it back after DeVito was benched halfway through the team’s second game against the Philadelphia Eagles. In the event that Taylor isn’t available—he should be able to find a job—it could be worthwhile to look into Ryan Tannehill, who is presently the quarterback for the Tennessee Titans. With Will Levis now the Titans’ guy, Tannehill is expected to move on. Even if it’s likely that Tannehill simply re-ups with the Titans to support Levis, Tannehill seems like a fascinating prospect to keep an eye on.

Tannehill has completed 3,063 of 4,764 passes (64.3 completion percentage) for 34,881 yards and 216 touchdowns against just 115 interceptions in 155 games. As a starter, he has an 81-70 win-loss record.

With Daniel Jones a question mark to be ready for the start of the 2024 season, Tannehill would give the Giants a backup with a pretty solid track record who should be ready to step in if needed.
