Joey Porter Jr., a cornerback selected by the Steelers in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, demonstrated during his rookie campaign that he is a man who will never back down from a challenge.

Porter showed up and was tasked with covering the team’s best receivers, and he performed admirably.Coach Mike Tomlin expressed excitement about the player’s career trajectory. “His mentality is perhaps what makes him where he is most outstanding. He’s looking for a battle. He desires the demanding coverage. That’s one way he’s very competitive. And it’s a fantastic base from which to grow.

“He’s got growth ahead of him, but that’s real solid.”

In addition to 10 passes defensed, an interception against the Baltimore Ravens, a tackle for a loss, and 42 tackles overall at the end of the season, Porter made 32 solo stops.

Pro Football Writers of America nominated Porter to the All-Rookie team. Porter is a finalist for the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Porter did not start the season, but during the course of the first six games, he saw an increase in playing time, and in Week 8, when the club took on the Jacksonville Jaguars, he was given a starting position.

He didn’t turn around again.

Porter, the son of former Steelers linebacker Joey Porter Sr., said, “I think about that often.” “I don’t know how my body would feel if I played Week 1.” I appreciate that they took their time with me.”

While acknowledging that he improved throughout the season, Porter stated there are still certain aspects of his game that he wants to work on.”I feel like there are a lot of areas that I need to work on, and I am still working on,” Porter said. “As a player, I have improved overall. Even though I have work to do, I am content where I am.In addition, Porter was named the team’s rookie of the year by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Pro Football Writers of America, receiving the Joe Greene Great Performance Award.

Despite feeling like a CB1 and a chip on his shoulder, he believes it was worth it and continues to prove himself on the field. He still has a lot to learn.Porter believes his chip on his shoulder may not disappear until significant career milestones. He remains confident in covering top receivers, a trait he shares with many players. Porter’s desire to make plays and be in bright lights is a common trait, despite fear of the spotlight.
