Jim Harbaugh’s defensive coordinator, Jesse Minter, will continue to lead the team despite their relocation of almost 2,000 miles to the southwest.
Minter, who served as Michigan’s defensive coordinator the previous two seasons, agreed to take a similar position on Tuesday with the Los Angeles Chargers. Jim Harbaugh, a former head coach of the Wolverines, is the new head coach of the Chargers.
Last month, the two assisted Michigan in winning the national championship.
Under Minter’s two seasons as head coach of the Wolverines, Michigan’s defense allowed the second-lowest amount of yards per game in the country, at 268.8.
On Tuesday, 40-year-old Minter tweeted his gratitude to his old team: “I have nothing but love for everyone at Michigan, especially the players.” Together, we had an amazing adventure.”
Prior to taking the position as linebackers coach at Indiana State in 2009–2010, Minter worked as a graduate assistant at Cincinnati from 2007–2008 and as a coaching intern at Notre Dame in 2006. Before spending three years as Georgia State’s defensive coordinator, he served as the Sycamores’ defensive coordinator for two years.
Minter immediately entered the NFL, joining the Baltimore Ravens as an assistant coach under John Harbaugh, the brother of Jim Harbaugh (2017–20). Prior to relocating to Ann Arbor in 2021, he served as the defensive coordinator and safeties coach for Vanderbilt.
Numerous sources state that Greg Roman will be hired by the Chargers to serve as their offensive coordinator.
