Packers finalize defensive staff for 2024 season

The Green Bay Packers will be changing their scheme under new DC Jeff Hafley, and that means bringing in some new coaches.

Head coaches of the Packers’ defensive line, linebackers, and cornerbacks, Greg Williams and Kirk Olivadotti, have all left the team. Hafley did not lose time in selecting his replacements, and at this point, his defensive staff’s key positions are all occupied.

Under Hafley, the Packers’ defensive coaching staff is as follows for the 2024 campaign:

Defensive line – Jason Rebrovich

During his tenure with the Packers, Rebrovich has held many positions including outside linebacker coach, pass rush specialist, and defensive line coach. Rebrovich will collaborate closely on Lukas Van Ness’s growth.

Assistant defensive line – Vince Oghobaase

While his superior Rebrovich continues to work with defensive ends, one would assume Oghobaase will focus his attention on the defensive tackles. He is fresh off of Hafley’s Boston College staff, where he spent four seasons as a defensive lineman specialist.

Linebackers – Anthony Campanile

Campanile is set to take over for Kirk Olovadotti, who accepted a position in Seattle. During this coaching cycle, he was a candidate for a number of coordinator positions throughout the league. Additionally, Campanile will be the Packers’ run game coordinator. He spent three seasons as an employee of Boston College, but there was no overlap with Jeff Hafley.

Defensive backs coach – Ryan Downard

In Jeff Hafley’s design, safety is very important, and the function is very different from what it was under Joe Barry. They obviously believe Downard can make that adjustment, though. Downard is one of the most experienced coaches in the Packers’ history, having joined the team in 2018. Three different defensive coordinators have been witnessed by him.

Defensive passing-game coordinator – Derrick Ansley

The previous season, Ansley worked as a defensive coordinator with the Chargers, who ended up making changes after Brandon Staley was fired. As he has done his entire career in both the NFL and college football, Ansley will collaborate closely with cornerbacks in Green Bay.

Lastly, the Packers have not yet disclosed any acquisitions for quality control to take Justin Hood’s place, who is leaving to join Jerry Gray in Atlanta.

Thoughts on the staff:

All things considered, this is a youthful squad that fits a very young team. Campanile is a fiery as they come, therefore he will provide a lot of energy.

I’m glad they were able to keep Downard, who performed admirably last season despite having very little to work with in Jonathan Owens, Rudy Ford, and Darnell Savage. We’ll see if the Packers use the draft or free agency to acquire him a suitable safety.

Despite not calling plays, Ansley looks like a good addition to the team and will offer expertise as a coordinator.

Hafley has done a good job of striking a balance between adding new players and maintaining a system that the players in Green Bay are accustomed to.
