HENDERSON, Nevada Travis Kelce will always be the most fascinating player in the tight end room of the Kansas City Chiefs, if not the entire NFL, as long as he’s on the field.Go ask some Swifties if you need to know all the explanations on why. They’re commonplace, and this weekend’s Super Bowl matchup between the Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will probably see a large gathering of them on the Vegas Strip.
But Kelce is not the only tight end brotherhood member of the Chiefs who has had an interesting football career before becoming a mainstay in what their players and supporters refer to as Chiefs Kingdom.
Most likely, unless you’re an ardent Eagles or Chiefs supporter, you’ve never heard of Tom Melvin. You might not recognize the name, even if you are an avid fan.
In the middle of all the inquiries about his personal life on Wednesday at the Chiefs’ Super Bowl hotel, Kelce was actually delighted to be asked about his tight ends coach.
Kelce remarked, “Coach Mel, coach Mel, man, he’s been one of my favorite coaches ever.” “It has been really motivating for me to be able to relate to each other, bounce ideas off of each other, and discover common ground over the years and throughout the week. He attempts to take me somewhere fresh and keeps getting me better.
“He’s one of the most relatable guys in the building and he has that fire in him when you need it.” It makes the desire to come in and finish your work simple.
The answer to this trivia question is Melvin, who is also the cousin of longtime MLB manager Bob Melvin and spends the summers in the South Jersey town of Riverton. Since Big Red took the helm as head coach of the Eagles in 1999, who has been Andy Reid’s assistant coach every year?
Additionally, Reid has had head trainer Rick Burkholder by his side at every turn.
But Melvin and Reid’s bond began long before that 1999 season in South Philadelphia, on the other side of the nation.
Melvin was a senior offensive lineman at San Francisco State and Reid was the first-year offensive line coach for the Gators, having served as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, BYU, the year before they first crossed paths.
He claimed that before taking the position, he knew very nothing about teaching tight ends. However, he claimed that Mike Bartrum, jeff Thomason, and Chad Lewis, three Eagles veterans, had taught him everything he needed to know about the position. Kelce will tell you that tom Melvin is an accomplished tight end coach.
He has two Super Bowl rings and has been doing this for 22 years. But he hasn’t yet met Taylor Swift.
