In the World Snooker Federation championship match held at the Grand Blue Fafa Resort in Golem, the 24-year-old Hong Kong native defeated Gao Yang 5-0.
Cheung will receive a two-year entry to the World Snooker Tour following his triumph in the esteemed international amateur competition.

Cheung won every match he played in the first round robin and went on to win the majority of his knockout matches.

In fact, during his 10 matches in the competition, he lost just four frames thanks to a stellar run of performance.

After dominating Oskar Charlesworth in the round of 64, Cheung advanced to the round of eight with victories against Harvey Chandler and Luke Pinches, respectively, by scores of 4-1 and 4-0.

The toughest test came from Oliver Sykes, an Englishman who was the only player to defeat Cheung in two sets during the week’s play.

But with Sykes securely out of the picture, Cheung never looked back, and in the semi-finals, he outperformed Iulian Boiko with a superb performance.

He overpowered the gifted young Ukrainian, breaking the tournament record with a break of 138 and adding 65 and 111 after that.

In the championship match, breaks were more difficult to come by because Cheung and Gao, the 2020 WSF junior champion, were both overwhelmed by the moment.

However, the former was able to keep himself together the best, and after taking a 3-0 lead, he won an important fourth frame on the black, effectively ending his opponent’s chances of winning.

The demolition job was finished with a run of 60 in the fifth frame, and Cheung is now assured a berth on the pro circuit for the 2024–25 and 2025–26 campaigns.

According to Cheung Ka Wai, “joining the World Snooker Tour is every player’s dream,” as cited by the WPBSA.

“I am genuinely delighted and taken aback by my performance, particularly in the semifinals where I scored two centuries in a row.”

“I tried to play my own game and play like it was practice, which is difficult, but I felt really confident going into the final because of how I performed.

“I knew it was 3-1 at the mid-session break, so the fourth frame in the final was significant, but I tried to play the shot I felt was right, and the outcome happened.”

“I believe this to be the pinnacle of my snooker accomplishments. I am quite thrilled since I have always wanted to be a professional athlete.

“We have a lot of assistance from the HKSI, which allows us to play in contests and train with top players. For this, I am thankful.

“Hopefully, this will not change in the future, as it will make it easier for me to perform well in the World Snooker Tour.”

Bulscú Révész became the first player from Hungary to receive a professional tour card last week when he won the 2024 WSF Junior Championship.
