The Pittsburgh Steelers revealed on Friday that Jerrod Johnson, the coach of the Houston Texans quarterbacks, was the second candidate to interview for the open offensive coordinator position.In 2012, Johnson, 35, was the fourth-ranked quarterback with the Steelers during the offseason and training camp. Johnson never played in a regular-season game when he was a player for five different NFL clubs for a brief period of time.In 2023, Johnson oversaw C.J. Stroud’s outstanding rookie year while serving as head NFL quarterbacks coach for the Houston Texans. It was his only season on the team. With 4,108 passing yards, a 23-to-5 touchdown to interception ratio, and a 100.8 passer rating, Stroud is the overwhelming favourite to win the NFL offensive rookie of the year. He also helped the Texans win the AFC South.Johnson spent the previous two seasons as an offensive quality control coach with the Indianapolis Colts before joining the Texans in 2022 as an assistant quarterbacks coach with the Minnesota Vikings.
When Johnson was a player at Texas A&M, he once defeated future Pro Bowl quarterback Ryan Tannehill and left the school with numerous significant career passing records.
After Thomas Brown, Johnson is the second candidate the Steelers have disclosed as having been interviewed. Johnson has never had a coordinator position at any level. Last season, Brown oversaw the offensive strategy for the Carolina Panthers.
