According to The Daily Star, Pep Guardiola and company reached out to Alonso after Mikel Arteta left the team to join Arsenal. Alonso is one of the candidates to succeed Jurgen Klopp at the end of the current campaign. The former Barcelona manager named his compatriot the best Arteta substitute.

 

While playing for Bayern Munich under Guardiola, the former Real Madrid and Spain player had discussions about a potential reunion. The 42-year-old is reported to have been interested in the post, but in the end, he chose to turn down the offer.Alonso had just recently assumed leadership of Real Sociedad’s B squad in his first management position when Arteta was hired by Arsenal in December 2019. Before returning to the squad where he started his playing career, he had served as a coach for Real Madrid’s under-14 team.
