Najee Harris, a rookie rushing back for the Pittsburgh Steelers, seemed ready for an extra quarter of competition despite not knowing that the NFL awards a tie if neither team leads after overtime. A messy, strange football game from Heinz Field ended with a 16–16 tie between the Steelers and Detroit Lions.

In the last seconds of overtime, Pittsburgh was moving into field goal range when Lions safety Will Harris batted the ball out of tight end Pat Freiermuth’s hands. After recovering from the turnover, the Lions attempted a disastrous hook-and-ladder play with their last snap, and the play was ended.Jared Goff, the quarterback for the Lions, continued, saying he believed this to be his first tie of the season.Goff responded, “I don’t know how to feel either.” If my memory serves me well, this is probably my first tie. Although it feels better than losing, we are still not where we should be.

Due to this tie, the Lions’ winless streak in Pittsburgh, which dates back to 1955, will have to wait till the next time. Detroit has tied twice in its last nine visits to the Steel City, but has lost the previous nine. In addition, this is Detroit’s second tie in the last three years; the Lions have been involved in two of the three most recent ties in the league.
